The Distillers is situated
on eastern end of West Smithfield and in the fine City tradition of turning
former Banks into pubs, is in the former Lloyds Bank building (erected
1885). Between
the Bank and now, 64-66 has been a Pizza Express, Jamies Bar and bar called Head & Tails. Cloth Fair Chambers is just around the corner and St Bartholomew's Hospital
a little to the south, there are tabelts on the wall of St Bartholomew
marking the site of public execution which took place throughout the
centuries; in 1305 Sir William Wallace, leader of the Scots, was hung,
drawn and quartered on this site. Another tablet marks the site of the
16th century religious executions, when John Rogers, vicar of nearby
St Sepuchre's, and sveral other protestant martyrs, were burnt alive
on the order of Queen Mary I. |
